Warfarin (Coumadin) = decreases blood clotting by blocking Vitamin K Epoxide Reductase, an enzyme that that reactivates Vitamin K. Without an abundance of free/active Vitamin K, clotting factors II, VII, IX, and X are not activated, therefore decreasing clotting ability. Of note, administering Vitamin K is the reversal agent for Coumadin's effect.
An inhibition of factor Xa interrupts the intrinsic and extrinsic pathway of the blood coagulation cascade, inhibiting thrombin formation.
